Kerala to be totally GM-free

Andhra Business Bureau
Mar 10, 2010
HYDERABAD: Kerala, which has many firsts to its credit, will also be the first state to ban the release of all genetically modified seeds and go totally GM-free.

So, it will not just be 'No' to Bt.Brinjal for Kerala but also 'No' to Bt cotton and other GM seeds and crops.

The information was provided by Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

"The Government of India is following a policy of case by case assessment of GM crops. A final view on the commercialization of GM plants is taken only when scientific studies establish that it is safe from the point of view of its long-term impacts on human health and environment. However, as agriculture is a state subject, it is the prerogative of the State Governments to decide whether to adopt GM seeds or not," Mr Ramesh said.

The Union Government's plan last month to introduce Bt Brinjal for cultivation was met with stiff resistance with many states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa banning Bt Brinjal.
